Lush Makes Scents

A Triptych of Stories

T

Within our extended Perfume Library range is a very special triptych of scents created by Emma Vincent, inspired by her travels out in the field exploring how we source our ingredients; the people she’s met, and the scents she’s encountered along the way.

EMMA VINCENT

Our three in-house perfumers, Mark Constantine, Emma Vincent and Alina Gliwinska, have been busy creating a new range of perfumes. Four are available in all our shops globally, with a further eight perfumes and one body spray available in our Perfume Library locations and selected stores. In lieu of a scratch and sniff (maybe the next issue?), here’s the next best thing …

“The current battle within perfumery is still between poetry and status, between the sheer fun of smell and the deadly grip of luxury goods, in short between joy and tedium. Lush is winning that war.” —Luca Turin, perfume critic and author of Perfumes: The Guide, The Secret of Scent and more

Vegan Leather Jacket From £30.00 A smokey, earthy and resinous fragrance crafted to capture the essence of a well-worn, leather jacket. Swirls of tobacco, warming tonka and spicy clove evoke late nights lingering on into the small hours. Perfumer Mark Constantine was inspired by his hippy era, particularly a song by The Byrds released in 1969, back when wearing a leather jacket was considered a sin.

Chelsea Morning From £40.00 A sweet, sunny and buttery perfume. Inspired by Joni Mitchell’s song of the same name this blissful, butterscotch fragrance unfurls in a scrumptious symphony of scent. Comforting vanilla and warm tonka notes harmonise with a bright burst of joyful lemon myrtle and rolling spicy undertones of fenugreek.

“This is probably Lush’s greatest work

since Breath of God and a masterpiece for the ages.” —LUCA TURIN

Emma was in Hungary visiting one of our chamomile suppliers, and drew inspiration from the natural flora of the country. Chamomile blue is abundant there, filling the air with its characteristic herbal yet sweet scent. Hungarian Fronds Perfume £100.00 Chamomile Blue: Herbal and sweet Fennel: Fresh, herbaceous and warm Anthopogon: Essential oil from the rhododendron flower

Perfume Library locations London Oxford Street London Beak Street London White City Liverpool Birmingham Poole Glasgow UK On a trip to Ghana to visit our source of shea butter, Emma met and formed a friendship with a woman called Abiba. A huge support for her local community, and a single mother who funds her children’s education solely through her work with the shea, Emma was inspired by Abiba’s resilience and wanted to create this fragrance to honour her and her story. Abiba Perfume £100.00 Ghanaian Ylang Ylang: Heady and sweet Frangipani: Floral, sweet and spicy Bay: Woody and warm

Betel Perfume £100.00 Mango Leaf: Green and tropical Davana: Fruit and floral Aniseed: Sweet and licorice-like

While visiting India to see a host of materials, Emma and her guide enjoyed some drinks and food one evening. To finish, they had some paan—a leaf from the betel tree wrapped around chopped betel nuts, slaked lime and other materials. A key memory of her trip, Emma created this fragrance with inspiration from the paan, as well as featuring ingredients commonly grown throughout the region.

“Have breakfast with me mamma, I hope they’ll let us in, got a leather jacket on, I know that it’s a sin.” — Gunga Din by The Byrds

“The sun poured in like butterscotch and stuck to all my senses.” —Chelsea Morning by Joni Mitchell

A juicy burst of tart blackcurrant fades into a romantic rose-kissed memory wrapped in reassuring benzoin. Inspired by the passing of a friend, and the sentiments of Leonard Cohen’s song “Hey, That’s No Way To Say Goodbye”, this powerfully bittersweet perfume embodies the complex emotions of parting when words are left unsaid. No Way To Say Goodbye From £20.00

The Bee’s Knees From £30.00
