MARK'S RAMBLES As a perfumer, COVID is my worst nightmare—a nasty virus that can ruin everyone’s sense of smell. If you’re unsure what’s happened to yours, pop into one of our stores, and we’ll help. We now have second-generation Lushies—those that grew up with Lush as kids—and we’re fortunate that some of them now work for us. One such colleague recently said to me, “I hold myself to a high standard, and I do the same with you, Mark.” How wonderful it is to be held to such a high bar. At Lush, we have our standards, and we will not be persuaded to pack our skincare with harsh chemicals that can harm the skin. We also won’t create oceans of plastic. No matter how much supermarkets push soap in dreadful plastic bottles with non-recyclable pumps, real soap wins the day. Refuse pump soaps, and stick to the bars. We make the best. The reason Lush is still going strong, in a world warped by misleading advertising, is that the truth always comes out.

I’m autistic and recently started college, it’s a huge adjustment and I’ve been experiencing sensory overload almost daily. I love baths but typically can’t use bath bombs because they’re also a sensory issue, but Lush bath bombs are the only bath bombs I’ve found that I can use. They are truly amazing. I am in love with the snow fairy collection. I HIGHLY recommend trying the ‘Snow Fairy Roll’, the bubbles are mesmerising. This year, my favourite festive product to make is Bûche de Noël fresh cleanser. I love working with the raw materials like ground almonds, fresh mandarins and cranberries, and the smell of the product reminds me of Christmas at home in Poland. One of my favourite parts of my job as a Master Compounder (a Lush compounder who can make every Lush product) is travelling to Lush’s different factories and retail shops, meeting customers and colleagues to share knowledge about our handmade products and Lush Manufacturing. I love to work with our product inventors, and my favourite moment at Lush was working on a huge project for our Harajuku shop in Japan. I worked with inventors on 100 new bubble bars for the shop opening! I also had the idea to make a Watermelon Slice soap, which was originally because my oldest son loves to eat watermelon, so it reminds me of him when he was a toddler. I am so happy to see that this year it has been made and is raising money for such an important cause.

The River

Taking inspiration from the rich geological history of Scotland, the hot stones in the Highlands treatment, which are made from natural basalt, commonly found in river beds, are used to massage the whole body from head to toe to deeply soothe tense muscles.

Globally, Lush produced over 107 million fresh, handmade products in 2023, including over 33 million bath bombs. In the lead up to Christmas our UK manufacturing broke our bath bomb pressing record, pressing 207,911 bath bombs by hand, in a single day! We pressed and dusted 906,000 Snow Fairy bath bombs with glittering lustre, twisted and twirled 552,000 thousand Candy Cane reusable bubble bars and mixed and filled 1,200,000 bottles of Snow Fairy shower gel.

Vegan Leather Jacket From £30.00 A smokey, earthy and resinous fragrance crafted to capture the essence of a well-worn, leather jacket. Swirls of tobacco, warming tonka and spicy clove evoke late nights lingering on into the small hours. Perfumer Mark Constantine was inspired by his hippy era, particularly a song by The Byrds released in 1969, back when wearing a leather jacket was considered a sin.

Chelsea Morning From £40.00 A sweet, sunny and buttery perfume. Inspired by Joni Mitchell’s song of the same name this blissful, butterscotch fragrance unfurls in a scrumptious symphony of scent. While visiting India to see a host of materials, Emma and her guide enjoyed some drinks and food one evening. To finish, they had some paan—a leaf from the betel tree wrapped around chopped betel nuts, slaked lime and other materials. A key memory of her trip, Emma created this fragrance with inspiration from the paan, as well as featuring ingredients commonly grown throughout the region.

It’s been an opportunity for innovation within our product formulations, and to increase our use of other butters that support our vision of leaving the world Lusher than we found it. Finding alternative butters that can provide the same performance and customer experience is no easy task, but luckily for us, our product inventors were able to create different blends of illipe, shea and kokum butters to use in specific products. Some products like our Lush Melts and Scrubee are being tweaked (without sacrificing the customer experience) to incorporate blends of other effective ingredients alongside cocoa butter.

Amongst the many nourishing butters we use in our products, cocoa butter is a firm favourite. A foundation of the chocolate industry, it’s a multi-functional, rich and softening butter that’s solid at room temperature but melts on contact with the skin.

A recent report by Fairtrade International™ estimates that in 2022, less than 15 percent of the world’s cocoa was Fairtrade™ certified, and when you add organic certification alongside that, the percentage is even lower. Since late 2014, all our cocoa butter has been Fair Trade certified and is now traceable to a specific country of origin. Cocoa is considered a high risk material for human rights violations, including child and forced labour, and environmental risks like deforestation. Fair Trade certifications provide an extra layer of verification of labour practices, as well as ensuring farmers have guaranteed minimum prices (and various financial premiums) even when market prices fall. Organic certification covers the growing practices and ensures a minimum standard of ecological care. While cocoa prices have come down from their April 2024 peak, prices remain volatile and cocoa butter prices are still around four times what they were last year. Demand outweighs supply, leaving companies in a tricky situation when they look to secure their cocoa for the year. But as we say at Lush: the problem is the solution! Increasing our use of other natural butters to supplement cocoa can also have positive environmental benefits. For example, illipe butter is a NTFP (non- timber forest product) made from nuts that are wild harvested in the rainforests of Borneo. Our supplier is committed to stopping deforestation, and does this by creating market value for local materials that incentivise communities to protect the rainforest. So far, they have forest protection agreements in place with six local villages in West Kalimantan, Indonesia, that cover more than 30,000 hectares of rainforest. In addition to this incredible environmental work, the collectors also receive a Fair Trade premium for all the nuts sold to our supplier. While it’s almost impossible to imagine a future without cocoa, the current crisis brings home the importance of creating more resilience in all our agricultural systems, for everyone. Intersecting crises of climate and ecological breakdown, and conflicts, show us how fragile supply chains can be. But if we build diversity into the way we source materials, we can benefit smallholder farmers and the environment through livelihoods built on sustainable and regenerative farming.

But this year, we’ve found ourselves in a global cocoa crisis. In many ways, we’re in the middle of a perfect storm of intersecting issues. In a world where demand for chocolate is increasing and harvests are declining, prices for cocoa beans skyrocketed to record highs in April 2024—the result of a combination of the changing climate and ageing trees. This has driven down harvests in Cote d’Ivoire and Ghana, which are the biggest cocoa producing countries in the world. Understanding where our cocoa is grown is hugely important to us.
